Waterpolo(Finals) - Hall 6 vs Hall 3: 5-9 to Hall3

Published by Publications Team | Filed under Waterpolo

Being the concluding match of this year’s Hall Olympiad Sports Competition, the supporters from both Hall 3 and 6 came down in full force. Each standing on their sides of the playing arena, Hall 3 and 6 supporters, armed with yellow sand-shakers and green bottles respectively, were all set to cheer their all for their teams.

Hall 3 opened the scoring for tonight’s match, leading with 0-1, barely a minute into the 1st quarter. Hall 6. dawning the white caps for tonight’s match, retaliated, as Darras tapped in the high pass from Yimin, matching it 1-1. Subsequent tries on the Hall 3 Goal didn’t go so well, due to several mis-passing and miscommunication, which allowed Hall 3, who seem to have many strong swimmers in the pool,  to break through the defences. The first quarter ended with the score 1-3, favoring Hall3.

Any spectator by the pool would have to agree that the 2nd quarter was way more intense than the first. All players into the game, marking their opponents tightly and tugging each other underwater in order to position themselves for the ball. Winning the opening ball, Hall 3 opened the scoring once again. Hall 6 attempted many shots at the goal- a lob went too high, landing on the net. And a powerful shot from Yimin near the middle of the
playing field went over the post, missing it slightly. In between those attempts, Hall 3 landed another goal, bring the score to 1-5, intercepting a poorly-aimed pass, which saw the ball being brought all the way in front of the goal post, where Kang Chien had minimal chance of blocking.

The one and only opportunity which our guys converted
to a goal came 3 minutes before the end of half time. With a Hall 3 defender sacked for swimming over Darras in front of the goal post, the team gained a temporary 5-on-4 advantage. As all the players swam into their supporting positions, Darras waited patiently for Yimin to swim up, and the latter caught the high pass, tapping it cleanly into the right corner, away from the reach of the Hall 3 keeper.
The second quarter ended at 2-6 , not before Hall 3 pumped another ball into our goal.

Darras scored first in the third quarter, bringing the score to 3-6. The relentless assault on for the goal, headed by Yimin and Darras to try pull the score closer were mostly blocked: twice by the keeper and the third time, the ball landed short of the goal, as the arm motion of the player who attempted to score caught on one of the Hall 3 player’s head, dislodging his cap.  Following on, miscommunication in front of the opponent’s goal led to the loss of ball possesion, and Hall 3 brought the score to 3-7.

The 4th quarter was just as intense, as our team gave whatever they had left in them to close up the gap in scoring. The score was brought to 5-8, and by then both sides were visibly tired out. Powerful shots were taken at the opponent’s goal at long range, but failed to convert as they were, almost all the time, slightly positioned too high over the top post.

The whistle blew for full-time, with the score standing at 5-9 to Hall 3. Truely a battle of the best. Tonight, with the best teams pitted against each other, Hall 3 had clinched the Waterpolo Champions title from our hall, last year’s champions. With Hall 3 garnering enough points to be crowned Overall Sports Champ this year as well is no doubt going to be a fact found difficult to swallow.

This year’s Hall Olympiad, unlike the previous years, has been an eventful one, marred with numerous disputes and appeals. Nevertheless, as the night ended, all differences and disputes were buried at the pool. Both halls celebrated, taking photos dunking their Sports Directors to mark the end of IH.

Soccer (Finals) - Hall 6 vs Hall 7

Published by Publications Team | Filed under Soccer

Score: 0-1 (Hall 7 wins at Extra Time)

The soccer boys had a gripping faceoff for the championship title against hall seven on Monday evening. Throngs of hall six supporters clad in green and armed with our signature green tea bottles headed down to the SRC to cheer our soccer boys on. Right from the moment the whistle was blown, the boys fought hard. Their efforts at a tight defense line paid off as they managed to hold on to ball possession and took full advantage of our opponent’s blunders. Just a few minutes into the game, our team who managed to control the game very well, attempted to score however it rebounded off the goalkeeper. Juffri seized the opportunity and tried to kick the ball in, but missed by a fraction. The crowd went wild with anxiety and anticipation. Hall seven’s attempts at the goal were however many a times foiled either by the defense line or by our goalkeeper who guarded the goalpost tightly and who managed to dive several times in order to prevent them from scoring.

The first half of the match came to an all time high when Waileong made this impressive kick that sailed past everyone’s head, leaving the spectators gaping in anticipation. However, it flew out of the playing field. Off field, the competition between both halls in terms of louder cheers was just as intense as supporters rooted for their players. However, pit against our water bottles and booming voices, our opponents were of no match and their voices were soon drowned out by ours. Encouraged by the loud cheers, the team continued to fight hard. Another tense moment soon arose when hall seven managed to break through our defense line. However, the boys managed to recover almost immediately and picked themselves up and were able to thwart the guy’s attempt. By the end of the exciting first half, the score was held at 0-0.

With a determined and confident shout of “HALL SIX”, the boys took to the field again after the half time break. This round however saw Hall seven coming back with a different line up which enabled them to have a firm grip of the game play. With their tight defense, our players were shut down and were left with little room for advancement. As a result, many of the team’s moves were disrupted. Despite that, the boys held on and backed one another up. Perhaps it was due to this tight defense on our opponent’s part that pushed our team to support one another and this was manifested by the good teamwork and fantastic passing. Determined not to lose the ball to their opponents, each of the boys also demonstrated impressive footwork, and managed to get past the defense a couple of times. Undeterred by hall seven’s comeback, our boys put up good defense as well and managed to clear the ball several times, not giving them any chances at attack as well. At full time, the score was still held at 0-0.

Extra time was thus given and the game was to be decided with a golden goal. The crowd was roused to fever pitch by the tension of the game and the excitement in the air was almost tangible. As both teams were hungry for victory, good ball tackling and teamwork were evident. A few minutes into the game, hall seven was given a corner kick. There was some scramble at the goal post, and in the process of that, our goalkeeper was knocked over by our opponents. However, no foul was called and the game continued. Before Tianci could recover, hall seven made use of the opportunity and with a header, sent the ball straight into the goal, winning for themselves the championship title. Disappointed as they were with the referee’s calls throughout the game, the team still held their heads high and hand in hand thanked the supporters. Having come a long way since the very first preliminary match, the boys proved themselves to be a strong team with tenacity and perseverance. Well done soccer team!

Swimming

Published by Publications Team | Filed under Sports, Swimming

Score: Overall 3rd

Everyone had the itch to either dunk a friend, swim or touch the inviting calm and tranquil pool of water at the familiar SRC swimming pool. Does the early bird really catches the worm ? Punctual spectators at the pool had wished they had more sleep since the event only started 55 minutes later than expected. Definitely a case of the early worm being eaten up by the early bird . Nevertheless, I’ m sure the presence of the punctual spectators are a comfort for the swimmers who have trained so hard for this very day.

Presenting our report card at the finals.

And with all the scores combined we came in third for IHG swimming 2009 .Good job Hall 6 !

There were many swimmers who stood out at the competition .For those who were present, we would all recognize Ming Lee to be the only swimmer in our team who refuses to wear goggles.

Also, Kaiyan proved herself to be one of hall 6 strongest woman .Miss kaiyan can impressively swim as fast as the guys .yet, It is hard not to find Kaiyan breaking out in girlish giggles. This is one tough girl behind a girlish demeanor.

The girls were commenting on how the guys in our team have nice boards , for the definition of nice , please do contact yiling.

Hall 6 has quirky swimmers who find it hard to swim in a straight line , he is none other than Weizhe. Nevertheless, Mr zig zag swims fast. Imagine his unleashed potential if he had done away with the detours.

The swimmers were all very excited at the event, their enthusiasm and passion for the sport showed when all of the swimmers cut off on average, 2 seconds off their personal best.

Netball (Semifinals) - Hall 6 vs Hall 3

Published by Publications Team | Filed under Netball

Score: 32-28 (Hall 3 wins)

The night was not in favour of our hall, as the netball team suffered its first and last defeat for this year’s IHG. Our players had played superbly up to this point of IHG, and faced real competition this time round.

The first two quarters started out with both teams evenly matched. It was an intense struggle to gain a lead, but none of the teams managed to do so. The second quarter ended at 17 – 17.

With the beginning of the third quarter, the tide turned, with Hall 3 gaining a lead of three points a few minutes in. Vanessa made a good interception, but the ball was lost when Rebecca missed the goal. Hall 6 scored its eighteenth goal in the fifth minute. The next minute saw both teams scoring a point each. A missed goal by Shaleen in the seventh minute led to Hall 3 possessing and scoring. With Hall 3 scoring the twenty fourth point eight and a half minute into the game, a time out was called for our players to discuss strategy. Hall 3 scored again in the next half minute. A mistake by Hall 3 cost them the ball. The ball was passed quickly to Rebecca, but she missed the goal. A save by Shaleen allowed Rebecca another chance, which was a success. One more goal by Rebecca and the quarter ended, 25 – 21.

Four points behind Hall 3, our netball players knew they needed to play better. Hall 6 initiated the final quarter, with Shaleen scoring the first goal. Next, Hall 3’s ball was intercepted, allowing our players to score two subsequent goals, almost equalizing the score at 25 – 24. The next few minutes went by with each hall scoring in turn. At 28 – 26 with Hall 3 still leading, a missed goal by Hall 6 gave Hall 3 the ball and two subsequent goals. At 30 – 26 and without much time left, our players fought very hard (This reporter remembered Vanessa’s aggressive defense.). Our players gained the twenty seventh point, but the score difference was widen when Hall 3 scored two more points. Hall 6 gained one last point before the whistle was blown.

Table Tennis (Semifinal) - Hall 6 vs Hall 9

Published by Publications Team | Filed under Table Tennis

Score: 3-1 (Hall 6 wins)

The last hurdle to the finals. Finally, hall 6 has reached the semi finals and ready to battle hall 9.

The atmosphere was tense unlike other matches. Facing us is a hall that has triumph many other halls to reach the semi finals. Hall 9 is a force to be reckoned with unlike other halls that we have won effortlessly. Our teams had a hard time arranging the line up as the slightest mistake could cost us our championship.

First up was the male singles with Swee Lee, an IVP, playing for hall 6. The opponent was also a strong IVP player and the match was intense, with neither side having a clear lead. However, Swee Lee won the first two match with 11-7, 11-8. The third match was crucial to hall 9 as it means losing the men’s singles. Hall 6, while being anxious to seal the victory, had lost the next two matches b 8-11, 7-11. The final deciding match was greatly anticipated. Swee Lee took a water break, and with his nerves calmed, controlled the final match and won the last match 11-5. This was by far the toughest match fought by our IVPs so far into the IHG. Congrats to Swee Lee for clinching the victory for our first match.

The ladies singles saw Ng Wen Han playing for hall 6. This was an outright slaughter. We won 11-3, 11-2, 11-1. The opponent could hardly put up a fight and score beyond 3! Hence hall 6 clinched the ladies’ single as well effortlessly.

While hall 6 has many talented non- IVP players, many had not been able to play due to their lessons. Female doubles saw hall 6 sending Venessa and Soo Huey into battle. They fought brilliantly, though clearly overpowered by the opponent’s experience. Vanessa also managed to execute a couple of brilliant smashes. In the end, they still succumb to the more experience hall 9 duo. However, all who watched the match could vow for their never say die spirit dispite facing a stronger opponent.

The mix doubles saw Li De and Yi Shi fending the title for hall 6. Though clearly more skillful individually, they had not been paired up in previous matches. Hence hall 9 manages to put up a good fight though their players were less skillful. However, with Yi Shi being an IVP and Yi De being near IVP standard, hall 9 inevitably loss to hall 6. Till now, hall 6 has 2 win and a loss.

The mix doubles saw an interesting pair. Xiao Hong, an IVP, and Karl Tan Bang Zong, an EX-IVP, playing for hall 6. though with slight struggle, they manage to control most of the matches, with both players executing powerful smashes, to win the male doubles 3-1.

Overall, hall 6 won 3-1 in a brilliant display of our powers. It will definitely be an even more exciting match as hall 6 progresses to the finals.

Rugby Semifinal

Published by Publications Team | Filed under Rugby

The Hall 6 Rugby Team played their quarterfinals match against Hall 9 at noon. Both not enjoy a good start, neither teams were able to hold on to possession of the ball for long period of time. Passes were going astray and neither team was able to gain any headway in their pushes.

Four minutes into the game, a well timed pass from Alex allowed Qing Yao to run pass 2 defenders. Several defenders tried to give chase but none of them were able to catch up to him. One of them literally ‘bit the dust’ in the process, as he fell during the pursuit. The first half ended with Hall 6 in a 5-0 lead.

The team started the 2nd half with more confidence. The players were doing much better at keeping possession of the ball. 3 minutes from the end of the game, Fu Hang was able to pick up a loose ball in the middle of the field. Side stepping the defence, he ran down the left flank, scoring a try. Gerald missed the conversion. 10 – 0 to hall 6. Putting up a strong defence as well saw Hall 9 not passing the 22 metres mark for the rest of the game.

Semi-finals against Hall 2. For the first few minutes, Hall 2 had much of the possession of the ball, even as our team was able to put up a strong defence. 2 minutes into the game, Fu Hang was brought down by a defender in mid-air, while attempting to receive a pass from Paul. The ball was subsequently kicked out of play and Fu Hang was sent to the blood bin with Jian Liang replacing him.

Near the end of the first half, Hall 2 attacked down our right flank, their player evading three tackles, before passing to his comrade who made a straight dash down to the try line. 5-0 to Hall 2. No conversion.

4 minutes into the 2nd half, Hall 2 had scored 2 more tries and one conversion. Although the team tried to reorganize their offensive, it was difficult to break the stone wall of Hall 2 players. The game ended with the score standing at 17-0.

Soccer (Semifinal) - Hall 6 vs Hall 13

Published by Publications Team | Filed under Soccer

Score: 1-0 (Hall 6 wins)

The soccer boys’ semi final match against hall 13 kicked off with a bang. Having come so far, the team was determined to make this game a good one, and they did. Just within minutes in to the game, our team managed to score a goal. Their defender missed the header, giving our team the opportunity to make the score. Winston seized the chance at attack and tapped the ball straight into the goal’s mouth sending hall 6 supporters into raptures.

The game which followed the first goal went rather slowly. Our team took control of the game and many a times, foiled our opponent’s attempts at attack. Perhaps feeling a little down casted over the first goal, our opponents appeared torpid and even listless thus giving our team who was in contrast, energetic and full of life, an added advantage. Being able to take hold of most ball possession, our boys managed to create some opportunities at attack. Good teamwork and footwork was clearly evident in the guys. There came a point where these two were manifested when Daniel made a beautiful pass to Winston and where the latter, swamped by a few defenders, made a shot into the goal, but missed by a fraction. That roused the crowd of Hall Six supporters to a state of anxiety and excitement. Minutes later, another anxious moment occurred when Tim attempted a goal but missed by a bit as well. By half time, the score was held 1-0.

The second half of the game saw a stronger hall 13. Perhaps hungry to make a comeback, they managed to take hold of ball possession in the first few minutes of the second half and attempted a few goals. However, the tide was soon turned against them as our team managed to defend well. Even though in the game that followed, our opponents constantly kept losing control over the ball, our team did not exactly made full use of their advantage. This was due to a series of offsides and also, being tackled by up to three defenders at a time, many chances of attack were disrupted.

The later part of the second half was however characterized by stronger game play by our team. This was clearly evident as the game was consistently played at our side of the pitch. Moreover, Hall 13’s attempts at attack were always thwart by our boys’ tight defense which left them no room to advance. The game came to an all time high when two swift attacks were made by our team. In the first, Fuhang got past three defenders and kicked the ball which very nearly went into the goal. The crowd gaped in amazement and cheered him on for his attempt. Few moments later, another exciting attack was made. This time, Fuhang made a smooth pass to Winston who tried to kick the ball into the goal. However, the goalkeeper managed to kick it away. Daniel got the ball next and made an attempt at the goal. However, it flew past the goal.

With just a few minutes left before the end of the game, our boys held on tightly to the ball, shutting down the opponent’s tries at attacking. At the blow of the whistle, smiles of relief and delight broke out on both the teams’ and the supporters’ faces as the soccer boys’ victory signaled to their advance towards the finals.

Waterpolo (Semifinal) - Hall 6 vs Hall 5: 18-1 (Hall 6 wins)

Published by Publications Team | Filed under Waterpolo

Water Polo – Hall6 vs Hall5-Semifinals

The 1st quarter started with hall5 winning the possession. Looking at the first 3 minutes of how the game went, the initial feel was that today’s game might just be an fairly evenly matched one, seeing the way each sides’ players marked and closed in on each other for the ball.

Hall 6 scored the opening goal in the 2th min within seconds where its initial attempt was foiled as the ball landed in front of the keeper without our players being ready to capitalize on the moment. Hall5’s offensive was intercepted, with the ball passed back to Kang Chien, our keeper, who pumped the ball up the playing field with his long passes.

4th minute. A mistake in the Hall 5 defense led to the 2nd goal. The next Hall5 offensive was neutralized by poor passing in front of our goal. And another attempt, foiled in the 6th minute. Hall 5 driver received a long pass, but failed to convert it to a goal as the team had not taken up position fast enough.

The first quarter ended with the score of 4-0. As the second quarter started with Hall 6 in possession, more of our novice players were fielded, and both teams could be said to be equally matched, judging from attempts made at the goals.

A close one for the Hall 6 team: In the 5th minute, Hall 5 managed to land a pass to one their centre forward, who was waiting just 5 metres in front of the goal. The Hall 6 marker, on a miscalculated move, saw the referee issuing a ‘sack’ decision, leaving Kang Chien to fend for the goal himself. Luckily, in order to continue the offensive, Hall 5 had to do a pass from the current position. By the time Hall 5 players got into position, their advantage was over as Hall 6 managed to swim back in time to reorg the defence.

Hall 5’s next goal attempt was deflected by our trusty keeper. Awarded a foul, they tried again, only to have their high pass intercepted and there Hall 6 pushed the play into the other side of the pool.  Shot blocked.

Hall 6 scores at the 7th minute, with our player swimming towards the goal and lobbing the ball over the keeper.  5-0.

Hall 5 scored their first goal in the 4th quarter, as their player in the driver position, anticipated a long pass, lost his marker and freed himself to swim within 5 metres of the goal. Swinging his arm from that position, he delivered the ball under Kang Chien’s arm into the bottom right of the goal mouth.

As though fury was unleashed by this new development, the Hall 6 team stepped up on the frequency of their offensive, scoring a tally of 7 goals, including 1 from a back-hand. Courtesy of Yimin, Darras, Ben, and Jie Min, bringing the score to 18-1 at full-time.

Hockey Female (Semifinals) - Hall 6 vs Hall 8

Published by Publications Team | Filed under Hockey (F)

Score: 0-0 at Full Time, Penalty Shootout 2-1 (Hall 8 wins)

First Half
Within minutes into the game, Hall 8 was awarded a penalty-corner. Having the initial shot deflected but not cleared, a scuffle occurred right in front of the goal mouth. The ball finally cleared, much to our relief, but that was just the first of the many penalty shots taken by Hall 8 tonight.

Barely a minute later, another attempt was made at our goal. Though blocked by a defender, the referee awarded Hall 8 another penalty shot due to a leg-fault on our side. That shot was neutralized too.

Another penalty shot at our goal. Fortunately, it was a loose ball, and Shazana ran up to intercept it, pushing the ball out of the D. Alas, it was picked up by a Eighter, who sent back within the D again. Yet again, neutralized.

Testing the Hall 6 Defense for the entire 15 minutes, our girls stood strong and did not allow Hall 8 to follow through with the opportunities presented.

Second Half
The team played with determination, pushing the ball up whenever they could.  5 minutes into the game, another penalty-corner to Hall8. The ball was intercepted, and yet another penalty-corner again! How frustrating could this get!

This time, the opponent managed to get a steady shot at our goal mouth from the D-boundary. Driving her stick towards the goal mouth in one clean swipe, the ball flew from her position, unfortunately catching defending Shaz in the leg. Kneeling on the ground for a brief moment, she stood up and continued the match.

Another penalty corner yet again! This time deflected by Xin Miao. The last attempt at our goal was intercepted and cleared by Chin Thin, after which the referee blew the whistle to signal full time.

Penalty Shootouts
Hall 6 1st Shot: Chin Thin. Deflected off the left post.
Hall 8 1st Shot: A clear miss, with the ball rolling out to the left side of the goal post.
Hall 6 2nd Shot: Sera. Score! A clean shot to the bottom left corner. 1-0
Hall 8 2nd Shot: In as well. Bottom right corner. 1-1
Hall 6 3rd Shot:  Vanessa. The ball was high, caught by the goalie.
Hall 8 3rd Shot: Shot to the Bottom Right! Blocked! Good one by the Goalie.
Hall 8 4th Shot: Floating ball to the middle. Deflected.
Hall 6 4th Shot: Shazana. Blocked.
Hall 8 5th Shot: Score. To the left bottom corner. 2-1 now to Hall 8.
Hall 6 5th Shot: Yi Ling. Blocked by the Hall 8 Keeper.

Tonight, the Semifinals was conceded to Hall 8, and with that rounds up our Hockey Girls’ journey for this season. Everybody present at today’s match would agree that Hall 8 was the better trained team, but by holding them back and not conceding a single goal definitely is a feat, a product of the training undergone by the girls.
