Track Final

Published by Publications Team | Filed under Track

The SRC was surprisingly packed on a Saturday morning but what was even more astonishing was the distinctive hall colours that brightened the scene and added splashes of colour to the ordinarily dull grandstand. Those were avid supporters from various halls waiting in anticipation for the very first 100m girls’ event to commence and as usual, Sixers clad in green were all ready to set the tone right by cheering on for their trackers.

100m Girls’

The sound of the air horn sent Elaine speeding off, giving the team a good head start. The baton was handed over to Geraldine, who burst off at high-speed despite her lack of training in the recent months. Jiahui then took the baton in a swift action and overtook a runner at the 300m curve. With accurate steps and timing, she handed the baton over to Shalene who tried to close the gap between herself and the runner in front. As 100m was too short a distance for Shalene to overtake, Hall came in 3rd for the race.

100m Boys’

The instant Paul heard the honk of the air horn, he accelerated as fast as he could and kept in pace with the rest of the runners competing in the 100m race. The baton was quickly handed over to Xiaofeng who managed to close up the gap and eventually overtook the runner on the next lane with his superb strides. However, there was an unfortunate turn of events when the baton was being handed over to our third runner, Henry, when he was out of the designated passer’s box, causing them to be disqualified. Despite that, our runners did not give up but continued to relay down the baton as it was handed over to Daniel, who still tried to give chase regardless of what happened. Our runners did not bag home any medals this round as the nature of this race made it such that the slightest mistake can make a huge difference. Nonetheless, Sixers were proud of them for giving in their best.

400m Girls’

The 400m girls’ race started off with a spectacular display of consistent strides by Hall 6’s very own Sports Director, Shaz, who effortlessly overtook two runners at the first 100m. Shaz kept her pace and she overtook a runner from Hall 3 who was in the lead. Unlike the rest of the runners who were probably tired out, Shaz was unstoppable and successfully pulled away from the runners behind in the last 100m, giving the team an excellent head start. The baton was handed over to Xinni, whose burst of speed kept her in the lead. However, the 2 runners behind caught up but she did not slow down. It was a really stiff competition among the 3 of them as the rest of the runners behind were clearly out of their league. When the baton was passed on to Huiyin, she sprinted off and sustained her beautiful strides. At the 200m stretch, Huiyin was roughly 50m behind the runner in 2nd position and she performed a seemingly impossible task by overtaking the runner ahead at the last 100m. Overtaking clearly did not suffice so Huiyin increased her speed and opened up her strides and eventually pulled away from the runner behind. In the blink of an eye, Elaine sprinted off at top speed once again and expended all her energy in an attempt to catch up. Sixers cheered on for her and when Elaine crossed the finishing line and came in second, a roaring cheer ensued. This was certainly one adrenaline-pumping race to watch.

400m Boys’

Determined not to lose out to the rest competing in the 400m race, Daryl kept a good pace from the start. The rest of the runners trailed behind him and a few tried to close up the gap but their attempts were futile as Daryl pressed on and did not slow down. Daryl was third in position when he handed the baton over to Henry. Henry seemed to run the first 300m of the race at a comfortable speed, at the same time, ensuring that he was not too far behind. At the last 100m, there was a sudden burst of speed and Henry was on par with the 2 runners in front. Weizhe got hold of the baton, and living up to his title as Mr Horsepower, he easily overtook a runner, and managed to secure a safe lead ahead of the third runner. When the baton was handed to Xiaofeng, he bolted off like the wind yet again and completed the race as fast as he started it. Xiaofeng came in 3rd, and cheers from the Sixers did not die down even after Hall 6’s track coach crossed the finishing line.

800m Mixed

Finally, it was time for the long-awaited 800m race. Blessed with both speed and stamina, Geraldine steadily outran 3 runners ahead of her. However, towards the end, she slowed down a little but like fuel is to race cars, cheers from Hall 6 kept her going as she handed the baton to Satish. Satish started off fifth in position and revved up, catching up with a few runners with his long legs and extensive strides. As the Sixers roared on with ‘Yi Tong, Yi Tong, Go!’ in unison, Zann, who was the team’s last runner, kept a steady pace throughout the race and maintained a safe distance from the runner trailing from behind. Chee Yong then tried his very best to chase the runners ahead but they were just as fast, thus, putting them in the 4th position.

Our remarkable track team certainly did us proud and their speed and drive undeniably brought glory to Hall 6!
