Published by Publications Team | Filed under Basketball (M)
Score: 48-45 (Hall 6 wins)
Our hall’s basketball boys played a pulsating match against Hall 2 in the highly anticipated finals on Wednesday night. Many Hall Six supporters, clad in green and armed with our trademark green tea bottles thronged the NIE indoor basketball court, all set and ready to cheer their hearts out for our basketball guys. With a loud cry of “Hall SIX” the boys took the court with high confidence. Right from the first few minutes into the game, they put our hall in the lead with the help of Norman’s free throw and Daryl’s successful attempt at the hoop. Hall two put up a tough fight and managed to score back against us. Despite that, the boys remained calm and controlled the game well, playing it according to the way they want it to be. This was clearly seen in the moves they called out which were more often than not beautifully and successfully executed. By the end of the first quarter, we were leading at the score of 8-5.
The first few minutes of the second quarter saw our opponents scoring first. Undismayed by that, Jun Hong helped bring it back with his impressive 3 pointer shot putting us at a score of 11-7. Fu Hang helped us further secure a lead with two swift shots one after the other. Our team was clearly of no match for Hall 2 in this round as the teamwork displayed by our boys was indeed remarkable. This was manifested in the perfect coordination between Yeow Huei, Wai Keong and Jian Liang, which enabled the latter to score, pulling the scores further hall 2. Apart from teamwork, the boys also demonstrated impressive ball handling skills, nimble footwork and great intercepts, thereby allowing us to gain much ball possession. Our boys managed to double the scores of our opponents and led at the points of 26-13.
The team returned back on court in high spirits for the third quarter of the game. Hungry for a comeback, Hall 2 went all out and attempted to close the score gap. Nerves were frayed when they managed to score thrice in a row with each successful shoot at the hoop, bringing the score closer to 30-27. The excitement was at an all time high at a point in time when the ball bounced from one team’s hoop to another team’s hoop and as each team managed to return the other’s score with one of their own. This caused our team members to lose their composure. Jian Liang then broke this pattern with a lay up and this was shortly followed by Jun Hong’s shoot. This served as a huge encouragement for the team and they quickly collected themselves. Throughout the rest of the third quarter, they managed to shut down their opponents tightly, disrupting moves and was finally able to clinch an eight point lead at 39-31.
Confident, but never in the least bit complacent with their smooth lead throughout the whole game, the boys returned for their last quarter. Daryl kicked start the last few minutes of the game with a three pointer, giving the team a huge morale boost. Eager to catch up with us, our opponents scored a few points bringing the scores to a tight 43-40. A couple of free throws were awarded to both teams. Taking advantage of this, Daryl managed to secure a few more points so as to have a firmer grip on our lead. With 8 seconds left, Hall 2 surprised everyone with a 3 pointer shot, bridging the gap between them and us and bringing the score to 48-45. At this point in time, the atmosphere of tension was so intense that it was almost palpable. Our boys did their best to control the ball possession during the last few minutes of the game. In our opponents’ anxiety to get the ball back, they committed a foul and Wai Keong was awarded a free throw at the last four seconds. When the long awaited whistle was finally blown to signal the end of the game, the whole horde of Hall Six supporters broke out in a paroxysm of screams and cheers as we celebrated the second gold this IH season. Hall six won Hall 2 with the final score of 48-45. The basketball boys had come a long way since the very first match to taste this sweet victory. Well done guys!

Score: 34-46 (Hall 6 wins)
The basketball semi finals game against Hall Ten was literally a nail biting one. From the very beginning of the match the tension in the air was almost tangible as the two teams fought fiercely to gain an advantage over each other. Right from the first few minutes into the game, our opponents led at 8-4 as almost all their attempts at the hoop were successful during this quarter.
Despite this, the team came back on court for the second quarter feeling determined to close the gap. However, during the first few minutes into the second quarter, nerves were frayed as the boys were tightly shut down by their opponents. The momentum was gradually picked up when Daryl scored two goals consecutively bringing us to level with our opponents at 10-10, and sending loud cheers amongst the supporters. The team began to regain their composure and managed to gain back ball possession. Daryl’s three pointer brought us to a lead at 13-12. Perhaps sensing that our boys had gotten back on their feet, our opponents, in their anxiety to defend, committed many fouls and many free throws were awarded in our favour. By the end of the second quarter, the score was held at 16-17 with us leading by one point.
Encouraged by the lead, our team came back feeling even stronger than before. Better communication amongst the players was clearly evident and teamwork was manifested in the good support they provided to one another both on and off court. However, our opponents also put up a strong fight as they managed to intercept and kill moves, which were intended by our team. Undaunted, the guys still went out all the way and managed to secure a three point lead at 28-25 at the end of the third quarter.
The crucial last quarter of the match was fraught with tension. Hungry for victory, the game became increasingly physical as both teams were literally tussling for the ball. Early in this quarter, Jun Hong managed to help Hall Six further secure the lead by scoring two goals, one after another, with one scored with the aid of Jian Liang’s impressive intercept. With this, we were at the score of 25-33. Our opponents scored two more goals. Unfazed by this, our team continued to press on and Jian Liang’s three pointer shot further enabled Hall Six to pull away from Hall Ten at the score of 29-36. With 50 seconds left, Hall Ten managed to score with a three pointer and two free throws. However, that had limited effect in closing the gap between them and us as our team managed to score a few more goals in the last few minutes as well. Finally with just a few seconds left, our boys held on to ball possession so as not to allow our opponents any chance for attack. The moment the referee blew the whistle to signal the end of the match, cheers erupted and rang through the whole hall as Sixians celebrated the victory of our basketball boys. With the score of 34-46, our boys had fought their way to the finals!
